I needed more power.....

I bought an extender for my 70 200mm lens
it kicks it out to 400mm. Only problem is
you loose 2 full stops... so it took my 2.8 to a 5.6 lens.
I only had time to play with it for a few minutes tonight,
so the jury is still out.
Does anyone already have an extender that could give me some tips.

  1. I don't have an extender. Did you use a tripod? With a tripod holding your camera still (and a remote to trip the shutter, if you have one), you can use a slower shutter speed to compensate for the aperture increase.

That said, a 200mm is my longest lens (though I do have a cropped sensor), and I've used it to shoot the moon with my tripod with good results. I have to crop the picture a lot to see any detail on the moon, but as long as I get good focus (tough to do with the moon!), cropping isn't a big deal.

    Here's my best attempt: http://make-happy.blogspot.com/2012/05/126366-snails.html

And here's the tutorial I used. Very helpful. My settings were probably very close to the ones mentioned in this post: http://www.clickinmoms.com/blog/shoot-the-moon-tutorial/

  2. I have the 2x extender too. I used it on my 70-200 for many years and then last year bought the straight 400/5.6. Sometimes I even put the 2x on it for an 800/f11. The only problem with that is autofocus doesn't work at f11 so you have to focus manually.
I think you'll like the extra power, it's kind of whole new world that you see at 400mm. Looking forward to seeing 400mm pictures.
